Summer means Carrie!

I don’t know about you, but there are certain patterns that I want to make as soon as the sun starts coming out. I’m all about the fickle flitting from one new shiny thing to another, but there’s a base layer of predictably under that.

One of my favourite things to wear last summer were my two pairs of Carrie trousers by Sew Over It.  The baggier style means I don’t have too many fitting issues and the elasticated waistband at the back means they’re super comfy but still feel like I’ve made more of an effort than when I wear jeans. Result!

So, as soon as the weather started heading away from winter, this pattern popped into my head again. And then Sewisfaction launched and I saw this gorgeous viscose; done deal!

The fabric has a great drape to it but feels heavier weight than a lot of similar looking fabrics I’ve used before, which is no bad thing when making trousers.

I had a slight moment of panic when I prewashed it and measured to find my 2m was now 1.8m. However a quick chat with Sheona educated me a little; this is within the expected range of shrinkage, which Google confirmed. Some very careful cutting meant I JUST got all the pieces on the fabric ok, but it’s worth bearing in mind when buying your fabric.

It also explains why the first pair I made (you know, the ones where I was way too eager to get sewing to wait for a prewash) are snugger than my others; don’t skip the prewash, people!

There’s not a lot else to say about construction; I cut a straight size 12, added extra interfacing to the front waistband to stop it folding over and took the smallest hem possible to give me a nice, slouchy feel to the trousers. I also overlocker every seam to within an inch of its life!

I’m so pleased with the finished trousers and am basically wearing them the minute they get out of the ironing pile! It’s a subtler than usual print for me but that is just making them more wearable for work (shocker, right?) I am thinking I could do with a blue top with them to pick out the colour in the print, but for now, I’ll settle for matching my Havaianas and nail varnish! It’s the little things that amuse me!

What’s your go to summer pattern?
