Datura ftw

This is the point at which we move from virtual blog silence to holiday sewing overload. Apologies in advance to those who like their blog updates in a regular, evenly spaced stream: I’m afraid I just don’t work like that!

Today’s update from sunny (33 degrees) Cyprus is, after all, the perfect summer top.  You may know that I’ve been trying some different contenders for this title this summer. And yet every time I make this top, I wonder why I bother with any others!

I am, of course, talking about the Deer and Doe Datura top. Oh Datura, how I love thee! Tailored slightly to give a less boxy shape, broad at the shoulder and high backed, avoiding bra strap flashes, and smart enough to look good with shorts or jeans.

And did I mention I love the cut out neckline?

For this version I have, for the first time, resisted playing with the colour blocking potential of this beauty, instead using this bloody gorgeous cotton from Stoff & Stil.  I’ve used a few of their fabrics recently and I am seriously impressed, the quality is fantastic.

This particular one is almost cheesecloth like in texture, but not quite so loose in the weave. It pressed and handled really well whilst still being very lightweight for this heat.

I used my adjusted pattern pieces from last year’s course, but chose to cut the yoke lining from a plain white cotton lawn because I thought the print would show through and look odd. I actually really like the clean look this has given the insides.

As usual, I ignored the pattern pieces for bias and made my own continuous bias using one of my Prym gadgets. I also experimented for the first time with Prym Love snaps and I am a total convert! So quick! So easy!

I stuck with a matching blue because I love this print so much, I didn’t want anything else competing for attention; I did pick the ones that look like stars though!

I wore this to explore Kolossi castle this morning and it was perfect, but I’m sure it will also get a lot of wear at home with my jeans.

Perfect summer top!

No tripod on holiday, so poses are at the direction of my 6 year old!

(By the way, I apologise for there not being so many links as usual in this post; they are an absolute nightmare to do on my phone!)

So far so good for the holiday makes!

  1. I’m a big fan of snaps since I started making things for Baby J. I must get some star ones too! That’s a very neat neckline – and lovely fabric. Glad to see your photographer is coming up trumps again! x
