Have you ever had a series of circumstances line up in such a way that you find you’ve tackled something that you probably would never have got around to otherwise? This is the case with me and my very first pair of “proper” trousers.
I say “proper” trousers as I have made a number of pairs of pyjama bottoms. I’ve even made them for other people (!) which is unusual for me; children aside I am best described as a selfish sewer. Partly because hey, there already aren’t enough hours in the day and partly because…well, other people might think things were naff.
I digress. It won’t be the last time this happens.
Several weeks ago, I received my subscriber copy of Love Sewing magazine and actually grabbed some time to read it almost straight away. I noticed with interest the article by one of my favourite bloggers, Did You Make That, about the Made Up initiative she was launching to support literacy for children. Interesting, I thought. And then a child of mine needed attention and I forgot about it for a while.
Then, reading another blog, I fell over the Sew Indie pattern bundle 1. Which included a couple of patterns I’ve seen on several blogs and been interested in. And which also involved raising money for charity through sewing.
It’s not like I ever need much encouraging to splurge on sewing things, and so I dived in and bought it.
One of the patterns which beckoned was the Sew Over It Ultimate Trousers. Now trouser sewing has not been high up my to do list. It’s fair to say I’m a non-standard shape with a smaller waist and…..OK, and a large bum. That’ll be something to build up to over time, I thought. Too challenging for right now. File it away for later.
Then, there may have been a small purchase from Fabric Godmother
during House of Pinheiro‘s wonderful Sew Photo Hop (love Instagram!). And just as I’m despairing of my complete lack of willpower, I read Karen’s blog post about the Made Up Initiative and found myself signing up to make my first pair of trousers out of the lovely Fabric Godmother material. By September 10th. This year.
Help!
But I’m committed now, aren’t I? Best crack on then.

Yup, know exactly that situation! My Made Up pledge was a combination of identifying a trousers pattern with Wardrobe Architect, a Simplicity and New Look pattern sale on jaycotts.co.uk, and also seeing The Made Up Initiative in Love Sewing/around the blogosphere! I’ve actually made the Sew Over It Ultimate Trousers and butchered them a little so looking forward to hearing more about how you got on with them.
